Wine Down for CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation July 10th

Gundlach Plumbing is sponsoring Richmondmom.com’s Monthly Wine Down event on July 10th benefitting CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation. The event will be held at the Wine Loft in West Broad Village from 6:30-9:00pm. CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation was founded in honor of Charlotte Jennie’s (CJ) by her parents, Rachel and Roger Reynolds, as a means of “paying it forward” to all of those who helped and supported them during their daughters battle with cancer.  CJSTUF helps families who are suffering through the challenges of having a child with cancer – many of them face financial challenges and have other needs as well.cjs thumbs up

This year an anonymous donor has pledged to donate $1 for every $1 raised at the Wine Down event up to $500! RSVP for the event here. There is a $10 entry fee and you will receive a raffle ticket that enters you for a chance to win a great prize. Additional tickets may be purchased for $1 each. Healthcare Reform Program for Employers with 2-49 Employees

Westin Richmond Welcomes New Master Chef

The Westin Richmond is proud to welcome new Master Chef Robert Cillizza. Master Chef Cillizza was born and raised in the suburbs of Connecticut. After high school he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served two terms in Vietnam and on in Iraq. His courage has led him to be highly decorated with the Silver Star, and Bronze Star with Gold Star Second Hand Award and Combat V for Valor Award.  He received two Purple Hearts with two Gold Stars for wounds received in combat.

Master Chef Robert retired from the Marine Corps after 28 years as a Sergeant Major.  He was honored during his career by receiving numerous personal awards to include two Meritorious Service Awards, two Navy Commendation Medals, two Navy Achievement Medals, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Six Combat Action Awards and several others.  He was honored by President Regan for Volunteer of the Year in the United States Military.

After his military career, Robert enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.  He graduated with honors and qualified as a certified Master Chef.  In addition to his career as a Master Executive Chef, Robert is also proud to continue to serve as a private chef for Donald Trump and Al Roker as well as he dedicates time to appearances on the Food Network during the holiday season.  Additionally, Master Chef Robert has been recognized by Cambridge Who’s Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in culinary arts.

Master Chef Cillizza continues to serve the community through many charitable efforts, especially his work with St. Jude Children’s Hospital and Operation Smile.

Legendary Siewers Brothers Inducted into the Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame

Siewers Lumber LogoJohn “Johnny” C. Siewers, II and Frederick “Freddie” W. Siewers, Jr. formerly of Siewers Lumber and Millwork will be inducted into the Greater Richmond Business Hall of Fame this evening. Both will be honored tonight at the induction ceremony sponsored by Junior Achievement of Central Virginia.

John-C.-Siewers-IIJohnny, 75, serves as the company’s chairman and CEO. His brother Freddie, 81, is the company’s chairman emeritus. Johnny started working at the lumberyard in 1959 after graduating from the University of Virginia. Freddie has been active with Siewers Lumber since 1954, after graduating from Virginia Tech and serving in the military.

Siewers Lumber and Millwork was founded in 1884 by their grandfather and the company  has remained a Richmond staple ever since. Siewers Lumber and Millwork is responsible for many of the distinguished buildings in Richmond that still stand today, such as the Rectory of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. The two brothers have helped the company succeed for many years through both the flourishing and hard times in the ever-changing retail industry. Freddie and Johnny Siewers were instrumental in the growth of the company, helping them advance their retail business with an increased variety of products and services.

In 2007, they received the Distinguished Retailer of the Year award from the Retail Merchants Association. On behalf of the Retail Merchants Association, we would like to say congratulations on a well-deserved honor. It is our privilege to work with such a legendary Richmond retailer.

Dominion Riverrock This Weekend

Dominion Riverrock, organized by Venture Richmond and the Sports Backers, is the nation’s premier outdoor lifestyle festival, bringing athletes, spectators, musicians, and even dogs to Brown’s Island for a three-day festival against the backdrop of downtown Richmond’s urban riverfront. Enjoy the weekend celebrating Richmond’s beautiful riverfront.

Dominion Riverrock features live concerts throughout the weekend, an incredible interactive village, and sporting events including the Miller Lite Filthy 5k, James River Scramble 10k Trail Run, Boulder Bash, Slacklining, and more. For a full list of events and times, click here.

Festival admission is free, but anyone wishing to compete in a Dominion Riverrock event must pay to enter. Walk-up registration for all events will be accepted on site unless the event has reached its capacity.

La Plaza Farmers Market Grand Opening Celebration May 13th

La Plaza Farmers Market will have their grand opening celebration on May 13, 2013 at the Broad Rock Sports Complex in South Richmond. The goal of La Plaza is to improve health of the surrounding communities as well as to provide an affordable, accessible market opportunity for primarily Latino and African-American farmers and producers. They opened last April 2012 and are gearing up for an even better second season. The Market will operate every Monday, from 4 to 8 pm, from May 6 to October 14, 2013. Organizers of the Market are currently looking for vendors, volunteers, and sponsors for the upcoming market season.

La Plaza is a unique farmers market, and offers a mix of produce, crafts, and food, along with cultural surprises every week. Organizers of the local market in the Southside location work to promote healthy, active living, provide an economic outlet for local farmers, artisans and emerging businesses, while encouraging intercultural exchange and the use of Broad Rock Sports Complex and public library by the local community, overall fostering a greater sense of community cohesion.

Virginia Small Business Week Awards June 24th

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Richmond District Office will honor Virginia’s outstanding small business owners and champions at the Virginia Small Business Week Awards Luncheon on Monday, June 24, 2013, at the Westin Richmond Hotel.  The awards celebration is co-sponsored by the Richmond Score Chapter #12 and the Virginia Small Business Center.

The SBA Richmond District Office is honoring Work It, Richmond Editor Jacob Geiger with the first annual SBA Outstanding Advocacy of Small Business Award. The award recognizes his commitment to Virginia’s small business community through his media coverage and active participation in local small business events.

The luncheon, “Stand Up for Small Business,” begins with a networking reception at 11:00 a.m., followed by the luncheon and program at noon. Paula Otto, executive director of the Virginia Lottery, will serve as mistress of ceremonies for the event. Registration will open in mid-May at a cost of $40 per person. The Westin Richmond Hotel is located at 6631 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230.
